It has the largest average farm size in the region at 1,809 acres with 39.68% of the farms comprised of at least 1,600 acres. Average gross receipts are $278,062 and average operating incomes of $48,230 are the highest in the region also. The largest farm type classification is cattle at 54.02% with crop production at 36.70%. The M.D. has a major grain handling facility adjacent to the community and there is also a livestock auction market in the Town of Provost. There are also two small meat processors servicing the area. Opportunities include limited crop and livestock diversification, minimal value-added processing and agri-tourism; but excellent intensive livestock production, either cattle feedlots or pork production.
The Council of the Municipal District of Provost No. 52 has decided to have an Area Structure Plan (ASP) prepared for the Provost Airport and vicinity lands. The ASP is a land use planning and economic development document that sets out logical, future land use designations in the Plan area, conditions of subdivision and development as well as other provisions designed to capture the economic opportunities suitable for the Plan area. It is also mindful of present landowners and existing land uses so that any land use conflicts are minimized to the fullest extent possible.
The Provost Airport is the longest runway between Edmonton and Saskatoon with a 5000 foot runway. The airport now has a Nav Canada approved-published GPS Approach. With GPS, air ambulance can now decrease its descent to 486' and 1.5 mile visibility on runway # 30. Runway # 12 is slightly higher at 550' because of towers. Provost is served by fixed wing air ambulance and the closest altimeter is Lloydminster so plans include installation of a remote altimeter at Provost Health Centre to be monitored by ambulance staff.
The M.D. of Provost has recently purchased an additional 200 acres of land surrounding the airport. This now gives the M.D. almost 400 acres in the immediate vicinity of and including the airport strip itself. The 5000 foot runway and available land makes the area an attractive location for airport industrial development. The M.D. of Provost is open for business!
