The Provost Economic Development Committee is dedicated to retaining and expanding Provosts already diverse and growing economic base. Planned community economic development includes business retention, business attraction, community development and marketing. The Committee and staff provide cooperation, coordination, information and resources vital to maintaining sustainable development, growth, viability and vitality for Provost.
Provost provides wide-open skies and endless prairie landscape for those who choose to make their home here. New residents will experience small town charm, country living, old-fashioned hospitality and hearty handshakes. Life may not always be easy, but the challenges will inspire character while the peace and quiet invigorate your soul.
Agriculture and the petroleum industry support a wide range of local businesses. A large agricultural community that produces both livestock and grain surrounds Provost. An inland grain terminal is located just east of the town, and Provost Livestock Exchange Ltd. is one of the largest cattle auction markets in east central Alberta.
There are over 3900 oil and gas wells in the vicinity of Provost and the industry is confident that this rich resource area will continue to be utilized for many years to come. Several major industry players have branch offices located at Provost and many more small businesses have been started to serve the needs of the oil industry, providing lucrative employment for many of the local young people.
Provost is also home to a large service industry, as well as being the district center for health care and education.
Although growth has slowed slightly in the past few years (after an incredible expansion in the early nineties), development continues today on a steady basis. The Town annexed 300 acres in 1998 to meet the continuing demand for new building starts, and immediately 60 acres were subdivided. Provost can offer the resources your business needs!
The Council of the M.D. of Provost No. 52 is preparing an Area Structure Plan (ASP) for the Provost Airport and Vicinity. The ASP is a land use planning and economic development document that sets out logical, future land use designations in the Plan area. It is mindful of present landowners and existing land uses so that any land use conflicts are minimized to the fullest extent possible. The Provost Airport is the largest in the Edmonton - Saskatoon corridor, with a 75 x 5000 runway. The M.D. is pursuing replacement of its NDB & DME system with a GPS overlay. The community is served by fixed wing air ambulance and the closest altimeter is Lloydminster so plans include installation of a remote altimeter at Provost Health Centre to be monitored by ambulance staff.
The airport is located only five minutes from downtown Provost and the M.D. has recently purchased an additional 200 acres of land immediately surrounding the airport. This now gives the M.D. almost 400 acres in the immediate vicinity of and including the airport itself. The 5000 foot runway and available land makes the area an attractive and affordable location for airport industrial development.
Local transport companies provide daily service from Edmonton, and Canada Post, Greyhound, Loomis and Purolator provide small package delivery. Complete banking services are available at all three financial institutions, ATB Financial, CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) and the Commonwealth Credit Union. A vibrant and progressive voice for local business, the Provost and District Chamber of Commerce hosts monthly meetings, engages professional speakers, plans annual Canada Day and Christmas events and spearheads a variety of community fundraisers.
The M.D. and Town of Provost are open for business! For more information, please call: 780-753-2261/2434 or email: edo@townofprovost.ca or md52@telus.net.
